The University of Miskolc, Hungary participated in the DigiEduHack2020 world competition with a challenge about the concept of a virtual geological exploration field trip. The challenge was accepted in November 2020 by six teams of young earth scientists, representing four continents – Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. The challenge was organized by the Institute of Mineralogy and Geology of the University of Miskolc, in cooperation with internationally respected experts in mineral exploration, mining, and digitalization.
The task was to develop the concept of a virtual geological field trip and elaborate its methodological and technical details. In line with the requirements of the DigiEduHack competition, the solution should focus on the digital solutions that make enjoyable and useful of the virtual geological field trip, including virtual observations, data processing, and 3D representation.
The challenge was won by the team of the University of Oxford, while the jury pointed out in its final remarks that all teams presented valuable and innovative solutions that might contribute to the education of exploration geologists in the future.
The solution of the Oxford team – A short yet content-rich digital field trip – was recently selected among the 12 DigiEduHack2020 finalists and, public voting is open until 28 March 20:00 (CET).
