Between 19th and 23rd May, the three deputy deans of the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering (Dr. Ákos Debreczeni, Dr. Ferenc Mádai and Dr. Péter Szűcs) took a three-day visit in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, by the invitation of the Eritrea Institute of Technology (EIT).

Eritrea became an independent country a few years ago. It has significant ore reserves that shall be utilized in the future. For this reason the country needs domestic specialists trained in geological exploration and mining engineering, and they were seeking cooperation with our faculty. Beside the visit at the EIT, we got an introduction to the very exotic natural beauty of the country as well as to the ongoing exploration works at the Dubarwa VMS-type deposit. Geological conditions of the region that is located at the margin of the Ethiopian highland are very exciting. Due to the nearly 100% exposure, outcrops with different geological conditions, weathering phenomena are found step by step. Within the frame of the cooperation agreement between the two HEIs, staff mobility, training of PhD students, elaboration of e-learning programs are planned, in the fields related to geological exploration, mining waste management are also in the focus.
